About Cameron
Just below the fall line and near the Congaree River is located
the town of Cameron. Known for many years by those traveling along
U.S. Highway 176, as “that pretty little town” between Columbia and
Charleston, Cameron residents strive to present well kept homes and
beautiful gardens.
The 2000 U.S. Census revealed that Cameron is making it one of
the wealthier towns in South Carolina A large stable middle class is
one of the strengths of the community. Residents can be proud that
Cameron is the home to a large number of college graduates. Cameron
is also known as a safe rural community with a lower crime rate than
the average state level.
Although the population has decreased in recent years, with
approximately 450 residents in the town, there are a number of large
farms with historic homes located within a few miles of the town
limit. There are many homes on land grant properties that have
housed the same families for multiple generations. One home, the
Ulmer-Summers House (1750-1799), is on the National Register of
Historical Places. These homes and the many churches around the
community make for a pleasant leisurely drive.
Cameron is known for its agricultural economic basis. The main
industries within the town are Cameron Mattress Factory, Cameron
Cotton and Seed Company, Carolina Peanut, and Golden Kernel Pecan
Company.
The Old Cameron School Auditorium is the home of the Calhoun
Players, a group that produces plays for the public, is Cameron.
There is also a large facility for Little League games, tennis
courts, and a meeting room in the same vicinity.
On a daily basis, though, folks enjoy the afternoons sitting on
their porches with family and friends.
The Station located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 176 and
U.S. Highway 33 is a great stop for a refreshing drink, a delicious
hot dog, and a chance to meet the local residents.
Cameron is truly a “pretty little town”.
